Man rushes through burning apartment building to get everyone out
Seven people were displaced when a fire tore through their apartment building in McKees Rocks early Thursday morning. The three-alarm blaze was reported shortly after midnight at a complex along Chartiers Avenues. The building also houses Gilmore’s Lounge, which is located on the first level.Crews said the fire started in a kitchen of an apartment on the third floor. Heavy smoke and water damaged the second and third floors, crews said.Vince Russell, who lives in the building, said he didn’t think twice about running through the smoke to wake up other tenants.“I heard one alarm, two alarms, saw flicking lights and smoke,” Russell said. “So, I ran upstairs and banged on everyone’s doors. It was smoky, but I wasn’t thinking about that. I was just thinking about getting everyone out.”Firefighters were able to get everyone out of the building safely. The Red Cross is now helping seven people with shelter.“I heard people yelling, ‘fire, fire!’” David Smieszek said. “When I opened the door, I could see smoke moving down the hall. We grabbed what we could and got out.”Despite losing almost all of their possessions, the residents made it out alive and all said they have Vince Russell to thank.“I’m very happy everyone got out,” Smieszek said. “Thank God for Vince. He got us out.”Authorities said the damage is estimated at $100,000.
